Filipina tennis star Alex Eala prioritized representing the Philippines at the 2026 Asian Games over competing in the China Open, despite concerns over possible sanctions from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
Eala skipped the mandatory tournament in Beijing, China, due to a scheduling conflict with the continental competition, where athletes from across Asia gathered to represent their respective countries.
Possible fines and ranking-point deductions raised concerns over Eala’s absence from the required WTA event. However, the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) reportedly confirmed that she would not face sanctions over her decision.
PHILTA had sought an exemption from the WTA, citing the scheduling conflict and Eala’s commitment to competing for the country.
Eala’s situation highlighted the challenges professional athletes face when balancing international representation with the demands of the professional tennis circuit.
